“It’s a really good environment to be a part of. You receive feedback not just from the teachers but the other students as well”
Jewellery graduate Camilla Dessau has shown she’s a diamond in the rough by winning a prestigious jewellery competition.
On 29 January, the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Jewellery) student was awarded The Kaiserman Prize.
Kaiserman Jewellers in South Yarra awarded Camilla and two other lucky winners rent-free studio space, materials, tools and expert industry mentoring.
She will also be part of a special exhibition in October which will showcase her own designs at the jewellery store’s exclusive showroom.
The competition was open to all budding jewellers who are now studying or have completed formal jewellery training at a recognised institution within the last 12 months.
After completing the advanced diploma in November last year, Camilla said she was stunned to win the competition.
“It was very exciting. It was such a huge surprise as I had this feeling there were going to be some very accomplished jewellers entering,” she said.
Camilla said she entered four jewellery pieces into the competition.
“When they called to tell me I was a finalist I asked which piece had got through. They told me they liked all of them. They used three in the competition’s exhibition,” she said.
Camilla said Box Hill Institute gave her the skills she needed to become a professional jeweller.
“When I arrived at the Institute in 2005 I couldn’t do much more than design. Now I can create a finished product,” she said.
“The teachers encourage you to sketch your ideas and how to complete more complex pieces. The staff shared their knowledge and time between all of us.
“It’s a really good environment to be a part of. You receive feedback not just from the teachers but the other students as well.”
