"It was good, the pre-apprenticeship taught me about the trade and what to expect."
It's official water plays a key role Brad Porters life. While few would deny that water is essential to all living things, for Brad it is part of life whether he is installing pipes, laying drainage or using it for leisure. It has become even more significant since the apprentice plumber was awarded the Box Hill Institute Apprentice Scholarship sponsored by Yarra Valley Water.
I was pretty happy, Brad said acknowledging the value of the scholarship in meeting the costs of enrolment fees and plumbing regulations and standards.
Brad decided to take up a plumbing apprenticeship after leaving school in Year 10 and taking up a pre-apprenticeship. I did work experience through school and then did a pre-apprenticeship to see if I liked it, he said. It was good, it taught me about the trade and what to expect.
Once Brad finished his pre-apprenticeship he contacted all the employers he had worked with during work experience and eventually landed a job with CDC Plumbing.
His work experiences meant he was well prepared for what could have been an overwhelming first day at work working on the multi-million dollar Austin Hospital development. I knew some of the blokes, so that was good, he said.
The big building sites have mounted up ever since. Brad has worked on Melbourne City Towers, Docklands MAB and Digital Harbour.
Ive got in with the big sites and kind of stuck with it, he said.
