Student Testimonial – Angela Fletcher

"I applied for the Andrew Jackson scholarship at Box Hill Institute though I didn’t get the scholarship, I got on the course and it’s been fun ever since."

When Angela Fletcher started playing with the Internet at school it did more than open up her mind to the amount of information in cyberspace. It opened up her mind to the possibilities of a career in computers.

Angela who is now studying for her Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems was one of six students to be awarded scholarships from the Centre for Computer Technology. The other students were Scott Spendlove (Continuing Studies Scholarship Electronics); Trent Woodcock (Continuing Studies Scholarship Computer Systems Mature Age Achievement); Morgan Thomas and Donald Heron (Continuing Studies Scholarship Electronics Mature Age Achievement), Robert Haines (Andrew Jackson Memorial Scholarship Computer Systems).

“It suddenly hit me I liked computers,” Angela said. “I sort of got into it.”

Angela explained that it wasn’t until she got her own computer that she started to play around with it although “I didn’t know what I was doing or anything.”

“When it came to VCE I wanted to learn more, so I did IPM at VCE, there was not much in it but it covered stuff I was interested in.”

Angela was hoping to pursue a computer science degree at university but also looked into TAFE courses.

“I applied for the Andrew Jackson scholarship at Box Hill Institute though I didn’t get the scholarship, I got on the course and it’s been fun ever since,” she said.

Angela said she enjoyed the variety in the course. “We do programming, hardware, software, networking,” she said.

“I enjoy the hardware, it’s more fun. It’s a pity we are not doing any more of it.”

A keen video game enthusiast Angela said she also enjoyed the ability to make friends on the course and its proximity to home.
