“The teachers are really good and the course is flexible, which is great if you have a job.”
Hairdressing graduate Amie Priestley has shown the hair and beauty world that Box Hill Institute students can cut it with the best of them.
On 4 September, Amie took part in a special hair and fashion parade at the Hairdressing & Beauty Industry Association’s (HBIA) annual gala dinner.
Titled Wings of a Butterfly, the dinner raised money for The Mirabel Foundation, which helps children orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug use.
The Certificate III in Hairdressing student said she was invited to take part in the parade along with several Victorian hair and beauty students.
“I felt really privileged to be able to give it a go. It was heaps of fun. The whole thing worked out really well,” she said.
Amie said she was quite shocked when the HBIA asked her to participate in the dinner.
“When I became a finalist in the Institute’s 2006 Outstanding Student of the Year – Vocational Category the hairdressing staff nominated me to compete in the HBIA Student of the Year Awards,” she said.
“I never expected to win anything but I received an honourable mention. It was because of this that HBIA asked me to be part of the parade.”
Amie said many students chose to use a contemporary Japanese style as part of the night’s Asian theme.
“Everyone did a really good job. It was all very different. There were some really amazing styles.”
Amie said she was nervous about presenting her work on the night.
“It was pretty scary to see your model up there but everyone did a really good job. They were all very different and it wasn’t a competition anyway,” she said.
Amie said she enjoyed the course at Box Hill Institute.
“The teachers are really good and the course is flexible, which is great if you have a job,” she said.
“Having the new Salon on Elgar is fantastic.”
