"I really had a great time at Box Hill Institute. The staff are very supportive...there were some lovely people who I learnt a lot from."
Professional Writing can be an immensely competitive industry, but with the right training, good advice and a can-do attitude, employment is a breeze. Well, for Box Hill Institute graduate and professional writer, Althea Brooks, it certainly looks that way.
Althea enrolled in Box Hill Institute’s Professional Writing and Editing course after experiencing the harsh realities of life as an out of work actor. “I wanted to be able to have a real job to support me while I indulged my creative side,” she said.
Indulging that creative side is what saw Althea win the Vocational Category in the Box Hill Institute’s 2004 Outstanding Student of the Year Awards, however it was in her writing abilities, not her performance skills.
“I’m thrilled and flattered at the same time,” she said. “I’m so glad that my efforts have been recognised. The fact that I was noticed shows that hard work pays off...there is a place for us nerds out there after all.”
After completing her Diploma, Althea took on some advice from a speaker in one of her writing subjects. The practical advice saw Althea’s resume kept on file and eventually she found herself as a publishing assistant with the largest secondary educational publisher in Australia, Harcourt publishing.
“I think Box Hill Institute gave me the confidence and tenacity to go out and take on that advice to seize those opportunities,” Althea said.

“Writing is really a theme that has run through my life. I took it for granted, but then it hit me and I realised that I love it.”
