Student Testimonial – Aaron Edwards

“The teachers here are amazingly supportive. They can give you real technical support and invaluable resources.”

Performing arts student Aaron Edwards almost knocked himself out when he won the annual City of Whitehorse Scholarship.

“When I got the letter I was over the moon. I was so excited I almost jumped up and down, but I would have hit my head—I’m 6 foot, 3 inches tall,” he said.

On 21 September, the Bachelor of Applied Music (Composition) student received the $3,000 scholarship during a special morning tea at the Whitehorse City Council offices in Nunawading.

“I feel so proud. It’s an awesome feeling to know that people out there are recognising what I’m doing,” he said.

“It’s so great that the City of Whitehorse and Box Hill Institute give people these opportunities.”

Aaron said most of the prize would be spent on securing his future education and musical aspirations.

“It takes the stress off and I can focus on my studies rather than living from pay cheque to pay cheque,” he said.

Aaron said his parents and teachers expressed their reservations when he first announced his intentions to pursue a career in music.

“Mum was against it at first. She thought it could be a bit risky,” he said.

“My Year 11 music teacher suggested I wasn’t good enough—now I look back and laugh at it. I can’t explain how happy I am that I made that decision, despite what other people thought.”

Aaron said studying at the Institute had shown him he made the right choice.

“The teachers here are amazingly supportive. They can give you real technical support and invaluable resources. My music teacher Lorenzo Capitanio is the most passionate person I’ve ever met,” he said.
