Behaviour and safetyAs stated in the Student Code of Conduct, all students must observe occupational health and safety laws, rules and standards. This includes the wearing of all correct safety clothes and equipment, correct use of all tools and equipment and behaving in a safe manner at all times. Students who do not wear safety equipment will be immediately removed from class and sent back to their employer or school (or to their home if they are not employed or at school). Students who disregard occupational health and safety rules and the student code of conduct will also be subject to discipline procedures. Changes in enrolment statusIt is quite possible that students make enrolment decisions that turn out to be wrong for them. If your son or daughter chooses to withdraw from their course or change their enrolment status we will encourage them to involve you their parents in the decision. Under these circumstances we also encourage younger learners to talk to a staff member about other options and we will do our best to ensure that they have alternative pathways available to them. It should be noted however that refunds of fees are not available after the first four weeks of the commencement of the course. Supervision of 15 to 18 year olds at TAFELearners are supervised when they are in class and certainly will be closely supervised if they are performing potentially dangerous course related activities. In fact, Box Hill Institute requires all students to complete a unit in Occupational Health and Safety before they undertake laboratory or practical classes. It should be noted however that there is no out-of-class supervision. If students need to walk from one campus to another they will not usually be accompanied. If you do not want your son or daughter to leave the campus between classes for any reason or to go the shops at lunchtime, you may wish to discuss with them the difference between a tertiary learning environment and a secondary school environment. Security after darkSome TAFE classes are conducted at night, even for 15 to 18 year olds. Teachers advise students on safe practices such as walking to the car park or train station in groups. As parents, we ask that you be aware of your child's timetable and make any necessary arrangements to ensure their safety after dark. |
