Box Hill Institute Experience

Box Hill Institute is a large TAFE organisation. On a daily basis thousands of students come to our four Box Hill campuses: Elgar, Nelson, Whitehorse and Ceylon. These campuses are located around the Box Hill business district, accessed by a large variety of public transport and within walking distance from one to the other.

We schedule classes for our younger learners to minimise movement between campuses, but sometimes walking between them is unavoidable. Elgar, Nelson and Whitehorse campuses each have libraries, cafeterias and bookshops.

At TAFE the emphasis is on practical skills and knowledge development, so a lot of class time is spent in workshops, laboratories and on practical work. For this reason classes tend to be scheduled in large blocks of time to allow learners to complete multiple tasks.

Students moving from school into TAFE will find that they are scheduled in 2 to 3 hour blocks rather than 45 to 60 minute periods.

Younger learners may be sitting in classes with adults. Our teachers adjust their teaching style to meet the needs of younger learners wherever possible. This predominantly adult environment can provide a good role model for younger students entering TAFE. In it, teachers expect reasonably mature behaviour modelled around what is expected in the workplace.
