| The Centre for Student Support Services delivers free services and programs to help students succeed with their study and life goals and enjoy their time at Box Hill Institute. Some programs or support are for particular groups of students, others for any students. Student Activities and Representative Committees (SARC)SARC runs activities, events and the student lounges. Lounges have microwaves, TV, comfortable seating and games. Through SARC you can participate in student representation and help with the magazine The Box, the diary or StudentWeb. You gain experience, develop your skills, meet other students and have some fun. For more information ring 9286 9904 or 9286 9676, or drop in to a SARC office, near the student lounges on each campus. Educational and Personal CounsellingIf you want to learn more effectively, or feel stressed or preoccupied by a personal issue, you might find it useful to talk with a professional student counsellor. Counsellors can assist with all sorts of issues, including coping with change or stress, relating to others, assertiveness, time management and study skills. There are counselling rooms on the three main campuses, as well as e-counselling options. Workshops, Short Programs, ResourcesWorkshops and group programs are run throughout the year to help you with strategies and skills in study, personal development, coping, self-management, healthy living, and time and stress management. Welfare ServicesSpecialist welfare officers can assist you with enquiries about fees, social security allowances and benefits, applications for course-related financial support and accommodation, including an accommodation register on StudentWeb. Careers CounsellingYou can clarify your career interests, discover new possibilities and gain a greater understanding of education and training options in consultation with the careers counsellor. The ‘Careers’ section of StudentWeb has information on events, seminars and expos, and links to useful sites. Support for Students with DisabilitiesOur Disability Liaison Service can assist students with a disability to participate in their studies at the Institute. You can consult confidentially and, if eligible, register for support (you will need recent documentation of your disability or medical condition). A learning support plan can then be negotiated and reviewed as necessary. Learning SupportLearning support teachers can assist if you are having difficulties with either Maths or English in your courses. They can work through your class work with you to help you understand and successfully complete your course. VCAL — an Applied Learning Qualification for Younger StudentsIf you are looking for pathways to further study at TAFE and/or employment (for example, apprenticeships), a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) program could be for you. VCAL is a hands-on option for years 11 and 12 students. It gives you practical, work-related experience, extends literacy and numeracy skills and builds on personal skills, which are important for life and work. Like VCE, VCAL is a recognised qualification. Support for Younger Students and the Youth Pathways ProgramThe Youth Pathways Program supports young people between 15 and 19 years of age in identifying and developing goals and plans relating to education, training, employment and personal issues. Specialised individual support is available to help you complete your course and achieve your goals. Support for Indigenous StudentsIf you are a student of Indigenous background, you may choose to liaise with the Koori liaison officer, who can provide cultural, study and general support to Indigenous students. The Koori liaison officer can also help in the Institute’s cross-cultural awareness and its delivery of productive educational pathways for Indigenous students. |
