Fashion students have woolly win at awards

There was nothing sheepish about the latest win from fashion students Melissa Mahony and Alana Foulds.

On 17 March, the Diploma of Textiles, Clothing and Footwear (Fashion Design) students cleaned up the catwalk at The 2007 Australian Wool Fashion Awards.

Supported by Australian Wool Innovation, the awards were designed to showcase the use of Merino wool by national and international fashion designers and students.

The competition’s main aim was to educate and encourage young designers about the benefits of using wool for their designs.

Melissa won first place for the Race Wear and Bridal Wear sections and came equal first for Evening Wear. She also came second in the Underwear Sleepwear category.

Alana won first place for her Underwear Sleepwear entry and was invited to complete work experience with wool specialist and garment manufacturer Merino Country for the win.

As part of the prize, she will develop her own commercial production line which will be sold on the Merino Country website from July.

Both students received $900 for each first place award.

Melissa said she entered the competition because she believed in the importance of promoting Australian wool.

“It’s such a wonderful product and I believe it’s vital for Australian designers to support these industries,” she said.

Alana said it was overwhelming to win the prize of work experience at Merino Country.

“I feel like it’s a step in the right direction—being able to produce your own line of clothing and working with Merino Country will be fantastic,” she said.

“I was just happy to see my designs up on the catwalk. There were people asking me if they could order my pieces.”
