Sewing to make a difference

Natalia Pelaez

Columbian fashion student Natalia Pelaez has stitched herself up a scholarship to complete her second year at Box Hill Institute.

Natalia, who eventually wants to create a socially and environmentally conscious brand, won the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central Access and Equity Scholarship. The $700 scholarship is available to continuing students studying the Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Technology at Box Hill Institute.

“After I finish my studies, I want to create my own label with a strong social perspective, employing matured-aged women to manufacture and work with the local materials and fibres. It will be environmentally friendly and use recycled and natural materials as the base for the garments and eventually accessories,” said Natalia.

“More than the money though, the most important aspect of the win is that it represents an acknowledgment and recognition from the Institute of my hard work. I would like to say to the scholarship provider that I am very thankful for this prize and that it has motivated me to work even harder.”
