Nadia's tailor-made scholarship win

Fashion student Nadia Foti uses some of the Institute’s high-tech fashion equipment to construct her garments.

Fashion student Nadia Foti has her fashion career tailored to perfection.

On 9 May, the Diploma of Textiles, Clothing and Footwear (Fashion Design) student was awarded the 2007 Rotary Club of Box Hill Central Fashion Scholarship, worth $700.

“I was extremely happy to win. It’s a huge relief,” she said.

“It shows that Box Hill Institute has hope in me. I never realised how big of a process it was to get selected for a scholarship—it has made me that much more grateful.”

Nadia said she would use the prize money to invest in fabrics for her designs or to purchase digital graphic design software program Adobe Illustrator.

“I’m delighted that the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central and the Institute want to support students,” she said.

Nadia said the scholarship win was one of her more recent achievements.

“In 2005, I won the Dragon’s Abreast fashion competition where I had to design an evening gown which was suitable for breast cancer survivors,” she said.

“The prize was one week work experience with Collette Dinnigan in Sydney.”

“Collette gave me her autograph as a gift. She’s incredibly busy doing fashion shows and events,” she said.

Nadia was also a finalist in the Annual Fashion Design Awards, hosted by the National Retail Association on the Gold Coast.

“I had to design a collection of Australiana-inspired outfits. My work made it to the final six out of 64 entries,” she said.

Nadia said the award’s fashion parade was televised on Channel Nine in December last year.

She said she came to Box Hill Institute after completing a fashion course at Charles Darwin University in the Northern Territory and working as an apprentice dressmaker for two years.

“I moved to Melbourne because it’s the fashion capital. There are more opportunities here,” she said.
