Lauren leads way with Lions scholarship
Graphic arts student Lauren Ward recently won the Access and Equity Scholarship sponsored by the Vermont Lions Club.
Box Hill Institute student Lauren Ward won’t let her learning difficulty stop her from achieving her dream of working in the graphic art industry.
On 9 May, Lauren was awarded more than $1,000 for winning the 2007 Access and Equity Scholarship, sponsored by the Vermont Lions Club.
The Diploma of Arts (Graphic Arts) student said she was grateful to Box Hill Institute and Vermont Lions Club for providing a scholarship for students experiencing financial hardship.
“I’m appreciative they gave me to the opportunity to be able to work to my full potential by getting the resources I need to study,” she said.
“It makes you feel special because someone has seen that you have talent in your chosen industry.”
Lauren said the scholarship allowed students to focus 100 percent on their studies.
“So many students have to work part-time while they complete their course and it can take them away from studying,” she said.
“It’s fantastic that there are people in the community, such as the Lions Club, who want to help young people by financially supporting them to fulfil their dreams.”
Lauren said she hoped to use her prize money to buy a new computer to further aid her studies.
“I originally went for the scholarship to help my family out financially as they’ve been supporting me throughout the course,” she said.
“I wanted to do something that ensured I wouldn’t be disadvantaged during my studies."
Lauren said she came to Box Hill Institute after completing a Certificate II in Printing and Graphic Arts (Desktop Publishing) at Chisholm Institute.
“I first visited the Institute when I was studying at school. I was very impressed by the standard of work being produced,” she said.
“”I’ve always been interested in drawing and graphic arts. I knew this is what I wanted to do.”
