No bad hair days for Jasyn
Hairdressing apprentice and Outstanding Student of the Year Awards finalist Jasyn Mitchell recently won the HBIA Apprentice of the Year.
Hairdressing apprentice Jasyn Mitchell has shown he’s a hair cut above the rest.
On 19 June, the Certificate III in Hairdressing student was announced as the Hairdressing & Beauty Industry Association’s (HBIA) Apprentice of the Year at a special dinner held at the Powerhouse Function Centre in Albert Park.
Jasyn was also a finalist in the 2007 Outstanding Apprentice of the Year Awards.
He said he was shocked but also honoured to receive the coveted title.
“I was feeling a little dazed from all the attention but I was really happy to have won. Part of me loved it all, but another part of me was petrified from all the fuss,” he said.
“Winning was a great payback for all the support I’ve received. It was a fantastic night.”
Jasyn said he loved working at Sharde Salon in Glen Waverley and East Doncaster with his boss Vince Calavetta.
“The people at the salon are warm, respectful, loyal and honest. It’s great to have that level of support and know that you’re secure in your job,” he said.
Jasyn said he temporarily changed career paths after having some bad experiences when first attempting a hairdressing apprenticeship.
“I ended up completing a human resources course at the Institute instead,” he said.
“After the course I attended a seminar where the speaker was talking about following your passion. It made me realise I wanted to go back to hairdressing.”
Jasyn said he believed Box Hill Institute’s hairdressing courses and staff were world class.
“It’s not just in the delivery of courses but also the attentiveness of the educators. If there’s a problem, they’ll hold your hand through every step,” he said.
“I’ve always felt they gently push us—they don’t baby us, but encourage us to take on challenges and better ourselves.”
