Dreams of the small screen
Pursuing a career in television is now possible for Simone Chenoweth when she was announced the 2007 Network Ten Laura Irwin and Peter Mastrogiannis Perpetual Scholarship recipient.
Sponsor of the scholarship, Network Ten, will provide Simone with $7,500 towards her studies. The sponsorship is available to a Box Hill Institute Certificate IV in Broadcasting (Television) student in honour of two former employees Laura Irwin and Peter Mastrogiannis, who tragically lost their lives in 2006. Laura Irwin was an outstanding past broadcast TV student who came to Box Hill from near Shepparton. She gained a one-year traineeship with Network Ten prior to being placed on staff.
Simone, formally a South Australian student, has moved to Melbourne to take up the scholarship.
“I originally found the Broadcasting (Television) course through the VTAC webstie, but when I told my parents it was really what I wanted to do, they said they wouldn’t be able to afford to help me move this year. They suggested I apply for the scholarship but I don’t think they really expected me to win!”
Simone says the win will mean she can follow her dream of a career in television, possibly in the sports TV area:
“When I was told I had won, I thought someone was playing a joke on me. This is something I’ve wanted to do my whole life. Winning this scholarship means I’ll be able to make a future for myself sooner, rather than later. I’m really excited about the move to Melbourne and doing the course I want to do. I’m really lucky to be 18 years old, know exactly the direction I want to go in, and now I’ll actually be able to move in that direction.”
Broadcasting (Television) teacher, Bill Drinkwater, said that Simone’s submission was outstanding and reflected the passion she had to become part of the television industry.
