The Melbourne public transport system

There is an extensive network of trains, trams and buses in Melbourne.  The transport system around the metropolitan area of Melbourne is called the Met.

The area is divided into two zones.  So when you are buying a ticket, you need to know two things: which zones you will travel in and how long you will travel.  You can buy a ticket (known as a metcard) for just one zone, or for two zones; and for only two hours or all day long. With one ticket you can travel on any bus, train or tram within the zone for which you bought a ticket.

The cost depends on which zone and for how long you wish to travel. If you travel regularly it is most economical to buy a weekly or monthly ticket for the zones you need.

Concessions are not available to international students using the public transport system.

You must have a valid ticket to travel on the bus, tram or train; otherwise you may be fined.  And you need to validate your ticket before you travel.

The Met system operates from 5.00 am to 12 midnight, Monday to Saturday, and from 8.00 am to 11 pm on Sundays.

The nightrider bus service operates from 12.20 am to 4.30 am on Saturdays and Sundays. One of these bus services travels between Croydon and the city centre (going though Box Hill).

You can obtain a free timetable from any station.

Please note: If you have to use the train at night avoid empty carriages; preferably sit in the first carriage behind the driver’s compartment.
