English language admission requirements for formal courses


Entry to TAFE academic courses is based on English proficiency and your academic record. 

 

Special entry for mature-aged students (over 18 years of age) is also availble and will be considered on the basis of past secondary study, employment skills or work experience. 

 

1. English language admission requirements

Applicants are required to provide evidence of their English language ability.

 

a) For direct entry to Certificate, Diploma an dAdvanced Diploma courses (except for Nursing courses), the following language standards are required:

 

IELTS TOEFL Other

5.5 (Academic) with no band score less than 5.0

 

 

 

 

 

Print based 530 TWE (3.5+)

 

Computer based 197 TWE (3.5+)

 

Internet based 71

Satisfactory standard achieved from the Box Hill Institute English test or

 

Language of instruction in previous studies was English

 

 

   

b) For direct entry to Bachelor Degree courses, the following language standards are required:

 

IELTS TOEFL Other

6.0 (Academic) with no band score less than 5.5

 

 

 

 

 

Print based 550 TWE (4.0+)

 

Computer based 213 (TWE (4.0+)

 

Internet based 79

Satisfactory standard achieved from the Box Hill Institute English test or

 

Language of instruction in previous studies was English

 

 

   

c) For directing entry to Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing), the following language standards are required:

 

IELTS TOEFL Other

6.5 (Academic) with no band score less than 6.0

 

 

 

 

 

Print based 575 TWE (4.5+)

 

Computer based 213 TWE (4.0+)

 

Internet based 90

Satisfactory standard achieved from the Box Hill Institute English test

 

 

 

 

 

   

Note: for students whose Visa application will be determined under assessment level 3 or 4 requirements, IELTS is the only English test recognised for student visa purposes. 

 

Guide to improving English language
Applicants with insufficient ability in English language may be required to undertake English Language Intensive Courses for International Students (ELICOS).
