| During 2007, Box Hill Institute (BHI) established a vibrant new Extended Campus partnership with Hong Lam Vocational College (HLVC). HLVC is a new vocational institute established by the People’s Committee of Baria Vung Tau Province, located midway between Ho Chi Minh and Vung Tau cities, in southern Vietnam. HLVC is operated by a private, not for profit, company owned by Vietnamese - Australian property developer Mr. Nguyen Ngoc My, who now resides in Vietnam. At the opening ceremony for HLVC in October 2007 Mr. My said: “Our aim is to contribute to training skilled workers for the country by adopting international approaches to learning and teaching, quality assurance, and competency assessment.” BHI was represented by senior manager, Mr. Rob McAllister. At the ceremony HLVC Principal, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thu, drew attention to the core values of HLVC which include transparency in all operations and the development of a learning culture. HLVC is initially offering BHI trade courses in: - automotive
- welding
- electrotechnology and
- refrigeration and air conditioning.
HLVC has a strong mission to improve the technical skills of Vietnamese workers, and assist increase the productivity of local industries in manufacturing, steel production, ship building and the resources (oil and natural gas) sector. Baria Vung Tau Province is one of the major industrial and electricity producing areas in Vietnam. In line with the current policy of the Vietnamese government, HLVC is training many workers for international work assignments in western countries, the Middle East and Singapore. The employment and earning capacity of these workers, many who will be HLVC graduates, will be significantly enhanced if they possess an internationally recognised trade qualification from BHI. There were 175 students in the first intake of BHI trade students and the partners are planning for up to 500 in the second intake in October 2008. It is planned that BHI CEO, Mr. John Maddock, will award the first BHI Certificates at HLVC in September 2008.
