DurationOur classes run in 10-week blocks with intakes approximately every 5 weeks throughout the year. - From 5 to 40 weeks, 22 hours per week

- 1.00pm – 5.30pm, 2 days per week

Campus locationThe ELICOS Centre is located in Building E9, 465 Elgar Road Campus, Box Hill, Melbourne, Victoria together with our International Student Office. ELICOS students develop their English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. They also apply these skills in the elective subjects such as Language of Computers and Current Affairs. Further Study Upper-intermediate – 10 weeks Advanced – 10 weeks - On completion of ELICOS studies, students receive a certificate of participation.
- Students who study at Upper-intermediate or Advanced level in Term 2 or Term 4 and successfully complete the assessment tasks in weeks 6 – 10 will have met the English language requirements for entry into Box Hill Institute Certificate or Diploma level.
IELTS preparation in 'English for Academic Purposes' classesThese classes assist students to: - improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
- become familiar with the IELTS test format
- develop language and skills required to be successful in IELTS tasks
- practise test techniques under timed conditions.
Student ProgressSatisfactory academic progress includes: - participating in all class activities
- maintaining 90% class attendance
- demonstrating developing study skills
- behaving appropriately when on-campus.
MethodologyThe ELICOS centre uses teaching methods which are a combination of teacher-directed and student-centred learning. Language skills are developed using communicative and integrated techniques. Specific skills such as grammar and vocabulary are contextualised, and lead to authentic language practice. Classes use teaching materials which have been specially prepared for the English language classroom, and wherever possible authentic materials. These include language textbooks, CDs, computer software, newspapers, and videos. Only English is spoken in the classroom. Assessment methodsStudents are assessed at orientation using the Box Hill Institute entry placement test and interview and placed in the appropriate class level. Other English language proficiency tests such as IELTS and TOEFL are taken into consideration when placing students. The Box Hill Institute offshore placement test should only be used as a guide in determining class placement. Teachers are responsible for evaluating students’ progress. Assessment methods take a variety of forms including: - Competencies in listening, reading, writing and speaking; in-class activities
