| Training packages are endorsed industry or enterprise-specific performance standards, called competencies that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. They are developed and maintained in consultation with industry through national Industry Advisory Bodies (ITABs) to meet the training needs of specific industries or sectors. Training packages describe what skills and knowledge employees need to perform in the workplace. The main purpose of training packages is to provide a very flexible and responsive system to address industry training needs. Some of the uses of training packages are: - developing training programs;
- delivering workplace training;
- implementing workplace assessment;
- developing skills-based position descriptions;
- conducting job evaluations; and
- development of career paths.
Qualifications based on training packages can only be issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). An RTO is an organisation that has been registered by a state or territory training authority to either conduct assessment or to conduct training and assessment leading to national qualifications. To assist training organisations with the implementation of training packages Box Hill Institute gives practical and hands-on advice to public and private training organisations. In this role the Institute can provide guidance and assistance with: - interpreting and unpacking competencies;
- packaging qualifications;
- designing learning strategies;
- designing and validating assessment tools;
- customisation of training packages to meet industry training needs;
- maintaining an extensive number of teacher networks across the engineering industries;
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) processes;
- language, literacy and numeracy assessment;
- training gap assessment and gap training; and
- change management from curriculum to training package based training delivery.
