she enters
the ward
    a bell rings
backward
through the fog

he enters
    a voice
awakening emotions
in the dreaming
absence

we are the shoreline that we seek
not the sound of song or lay of land
only the song itself and the shore itself
we are not another road and other ferries
but the road and the ferry
the song the shore the road and the ferry

all them tongues
wagging in them heads
(like butterflies breaking on a wheel)
is many voices searching for a voice
and the bodies of these broken bastards
(distorted figures from a child's drawing book)
like shadows bodied forth and borne
upon the substance of a thorn

she watches them come
out of the showers
silent and naked
like martyred saints out of the flames
    through the fog he sees
the necessary wrecks bleeding rust in vacant lots
