Elegy
there was an absence
and the sun gathered in its appointmentsbreath steams across chilled fields
where foxes prop and wait like nostalgiathe crickets continue to threaten each other
under it shroud of grass the earth turns overbirds tuck their swiftness beneath eyelids
o' for the skin of rain that hides them from nighthushing the dread that stutters in my heart
the tightening silence
