Elegy

there was an absence
and the sun gathered in its appointments

breath steams across chilled fields
where foxes prop and wait like nostalgia

the crickets continue to threaten each other
under it shroud of grass the earth turns over

birds tuck their swiftness beneath eyelids
o' for the skin of rain that hides them from night

hushing the dread that stutters in my heart
the tightening silence
