What does this course involve?

This course is designed for budding furniture designers or furniture makers wanting to develop their creative and technical skills.
Using predominantly Australian timber as a design medium, you will learn how to use it within the furniture, arts and crafts industries.
You will gain a thorough understanding of furniture design and construction, learn how to produce technical drawings, make scale models and create 3D work from briefs.
You will learn to appreciate the relationship between the history of furniture design and the development of contemporary products.
Entrance requirements
- Australian Year 12 or equivalent with a pass.
- Relevant senior employment experience in industry will be considered.
English Language Proficiency
- A minimum IELTS overall score of 5.5 (Academic).
- A minimum TOEFL score of 530 for paper examination; 179 for computer based and 71 for Internet based.
Special admission requirements
Applicants will be required to supply evidence of ability in wood design and/or furniture making via examples of their work. Applicants are required to present a folio and, if possible, attend an interview.
Cost
$AUD9,800 per year, plus amenities and materials fees.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may provide you with employment opportunities as a self-employed furniture designer/maker, or as a furniture designer/prototype developer with an established firm.

What further study options will I have?
You may wish to articulate into the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Contemporary Arts at Deakin University and receive credits for studies already undertaken.
