What does this course involve?

If you’d like to pursue a career in the television industry, this course will prepare you for a range of production roles, particularly behind a camera.

Learn about call shots and cue resources in television production, develop your skills in shooting television in a multi-camera environment and operate a non-linear editing system.

You will find out how to create a production schedule, produce pre-recorded programs and mix a television production for taping or airing.

You will also learn how to roster staff, supervise technical operations and manage projects.

Can I apply?

  • You must have successfully completed year 12 or be mature age
  • Evidence that you are interested in broadcast television (not film making, writing or acting techniques) will be highly regarded

How do I apply?

  • To apply for a full time position in this course you must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process. Details of the VTAC application process are at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August. If the Institute still has vacancies after the VTAC places have been offered, you will be able to apply directly to the Institute.

    • At the interview you should:
      • present a resume/folio
      • demonstrate knowledge of the course
      • demonstrate knowledge of the broadcast industry (evidence of work experience in a related area would be an advantage)
      • if possible, present short video clips (you will be expected to present and discuss concept planning and development such as story boards, script and shot description analysis)

Will my previous experience or study count?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.

BCGCM3001B – Operate elevated work platforms - (15 hours)

This unit specifies the competency required to safely and effectively operate elevated work platforms (EWP's) in a variety of different terrains and situations to access isolated work areas. The unit includes locating, setting up, operation and shut down.

BSXFMI404A – Participate in, lead and facilitate a team - (50 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead and develop teams to achieve a range of organisational and project outcomes.

CUFADM02A – Address copyright - (20 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to protect creative work and performance from unauthorised use.

CUFBRD01A – Communicate using a two way system - (10 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to effectively communicate using two way communication devices on any production within the broadcast television or film industry.

CUFBRD09A – Call shots and cue sources for a television production - (65 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist the television producer/director for a live to air, live to tape or pre-recorded television production.

CUFBRD10A – Vision mix a multisource television production to tape or air - (50 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare a script for vision mixing, operate a vision mixer panel for recording and switch a program to tape or air.

CUFCAM06A – Shoot television in a multicamera environment - (75 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to position and operate a video camera to achieve the required moving image for multicam productions within the televison and broadcast industry.

CUFEDT05A – Operate a non-linear editing system - (64 hours)

This unit describes the skills & knowledge required to use a non-linear editing system for the editing of digital media for any screen based production. Film and/or video may of been of used in the production phase and digitised for the editing process.

CUFPOP03A – Compile a production schedule - (40 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and compile a production schedule which identifies all required resources and timelines for the completion of all stages of a production.

CUFPOP15A – Produce pre-recorded programs - (50 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for production and direct the recording and production of any television or radio program.

CUSADM03A – Manage a project - (50 hours)

This unit decribes the skills & knowledge required to manage a straight forward project or section of a larger project. It focuses on the need to meet deadlines.

CUSTGE01A – Supervise technical operations - (35 hours)

This unit decribes the skills & knowledge required to supervise and monitor the technical aspects of television production.

THHGLE05A – Roster staff - (30 hours)

This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to develop staff rosters. Rostering staff may be carried out by dedicated specialist staff, team leaders, operational supervisors or managers.
