What does this course involve?
This hands-on course will give you a greater understanding of the refrigeration and airconditioning industries.
As well as learning how to use the tools, electrical wiring and equipment of the trade, you値l learn how to identify and handle various refrigerants, and service and repair cooling systems.
You値l install and maintain refrigeration and airconditioning piping and tubing, electrical apparatus and circuits.
You値l also learn how to monitor energy use, and diagnose and rectify faults, in an electrotechnology environment.
What employment opportunities will I have?
You may gain employment within the refrigeration and airconditioning industries as a licensed refrigeration mechanic.

Length of course
Part time 3 years (1 day per week) with the 4th year spent entirely on the job. You値l attend TAFE in 1 week blocks out of 8, or at 1 day a week for 40 weeks.

MENE172 – Electrical wiring & equipment 1 - (20 hours)
This module provides students with knowledge and skills to work safely with electrical wiring and equipment, and how to use relevant standards. Students are able to identify common cable types and develop basic skills in terminating those cables. Also, students learn to select and apply a variety of fixing devices used in installing cables, cable enclosures, and accessories.
MENE175 – Workshop practices - (40 hours)
This module provides the student with the opportunity to develop basic workshop skills for working in the electrical and electronic industry.
MENR01 – Refrigeration fundamentals - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge of the principles of refrigeration and the way that these principles are currently applied within the industry.
MENR02 – Refrigeration procedures - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills that are fundamental to the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.
MENR03 – Refrigerants - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to safely handle, service, and differentiate between various refrigerants.
MENR04 – Refrigeration system components - (20 hours)
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills of refrigeration system components, types, and their applications.
MENR05 – Fundamentals of air conditioning - (20 hours)
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to identify, explain, and apply the fundamentals of air conditioning.
MENR06 – Domestic refrigerators & freezers - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to diagnose and repair domestic refrigerators and freezers.
MENR07 – Residential air conditioning - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to install, service, and fault find residential air conditioning systems.
MENR08 – Appliance motors & circuits - (60 hours)
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to service and fault find single phase appliance motors and their associated circuits.
MENR09 – Refrigeration system operation - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide the student with knowledge and skills in the operation of the refrigeration system.
MENR10 – Refrigerant controls - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge of refrigerant flow controls.
MENR11 – Refrigeration piping equipment (installation) - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to install refrigeration piping and equipment.
MENR12 – System control - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills of electrical controls.
MENR13 – Ventilation - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to carry out service commissioning (basic) and installation tasks on ventilation systems and their associated equipment.
MENR14 – Air conditioning systems - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to identify, explain, and apply operating principles to air conditioning system componentry, and to diagnose and rectify faults within typical air conditioning systems of the packaged, central station, evaporative or thermal storage type.

This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to commission, fault find, and repair simple air conditioning control systems.
MENR18 – Merchandising & display cabinets - (40 hours)
This module provides participants with the knowledge and skills to install, service, and maintain merchandising and display cabinets.
MENR19 – Cool rooms/freezer rooms - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to install, service, and maintain cool rooms and freezer rooms.
MENR20 – Beverage dispensers - (40 hours)
This module allows students to develop knowledge component, construction, and operation characteristics of different types of hotel/beverage refrigeration equipment and skills in servicing and maintenance of this equipment.
MENR29 – Capillary systems - (20 hours)
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to select and replace a capillary tube and return the system to service.
MENUE052 – Applied electricity 1 - (40 hours)
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to develop fundamental electrical concepts and principles.
MENUE058 – Electrical concepts & applications - (40 hours)
This module enables students to develop the basic knowledge of electrical circuits, the fundamental concepts of alternating current and electro-magnetism, and the application of these to motors.
MENUE508 – Refrigeration systems safety - (20 hours)
This module aims to provide criteria for assessing knowledge and skills critical to working on refrigeration and air conditioning installations in buildings and premises including installing, maintaining, repairing, fault finding, testing, and commissioning.
