What does this course involve?

If you’re looking to increase your chances of finding work in the fashion industry, this course will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills in a broad range of areas.

You’ll gain practical skills such as how to draw and interpret basic sketches, identify fibres and fabrics, develop patterns and use a sewing machine.

You’ll also learn to prepare and produce garments, calculate costs for fashion products and conduct quality assurance for patterns and garments.

You’ll also be encouraged to participate in industry competitions and awards to increase your profile in the fashion industry.

This course is also available to international students.

  • You must have successfully completed Year 12, or equivalent

How do I apply?

  • To apply for a full time position in this course you must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process. Details of the VTAC application process are at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August. If the Institute still has vacancies after the VTAC places have been offered, you will be able to apply directly to the Institute.

  • To apply for a part time place (or off campus place if applicable) in this course, you will need to contact the Institute directly.

  • Supplementary application requirements are necessary for this course. Please read the information contained in the selection process.

How will I be selected for this course?

  • Supplementary requirements to the application process apply:

      • You will need to contact the Institute in October on (03) 9286 9632 to book your interview.

    • At the interview you should:
      • present a folio (including sketches, drawings and illustrations of your designs)
      • present 2 garments which demonstrate an ability to work creativly with pattern, fabrics, embellishment and construction techniques
      • demonstrate literacy and numeracy
    • Interviews are conducted in late November for course commencement in February.

Full time - 1 year (day and evening)
Part time - available by negotiation (day and evening)

Year 1, Semester 1

LMTCL2001A – Use a sewing machine - (50 hours)

This unit covers the skills & knowledge to use a single sewing machine to align and sew work pieces.

LMTCL2003A – Identify fibres and fabrics - (50 hours)

This unit covers the skills & knowledge to identify fibres and fabrics commonly used in the construction of garments and accessories.

LMTCL2004A – Sew components - (50 hours)

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to align and sew components using a minimum of two machines and operation techniques.

LMTCL2011A – Draw and interpret a basic sketch - (30 hours)

This unit covers the skills & knowledge to draw and interpret a two-dimensional sketch of a garment, to identify construction features.

LMTCL3009A – Develop patterns from a block using basic patternmaking principles - (50 hours)

This unit covers the skills & knowledge to develop patterns from a block using basic patternmaking principles.

LMTFD4015A – Create pattern from block to meet customer specifications - (50 hours)

This subject covers the skills and knowledge to create a pattern from a block to meet design and fit specifications of the customer. This subject also focuses on Children’s and Men’s Wear.
