What does this course involve?

Are you a dance teacher or assistant, or a dancer looking to embark on a private dance studio teaching career? Then this course is for you. It focuses on three streams: dance (technique, styles and choreography), teaching (methods, principles and strategies) and business management (finance, marketing and promotions).

You will work with the principles of safe dance teaching for children, and learn about ballet, jazz and contemporary dance styles. You will gain an understanding of anatomy, stagecraft and production. You can choose to take electives in character or tap dance.

Gain up-to-date knowledge in the areas of injury prevention, anatomy, and physiology, and learn dance studio management and production technical support skills, as well as the practical elements of teaching.

The course has a high practical content and you will be expected to work hours outside of your class allocations for various presentations. There are also elements of technical production, including a final presentation in the Laurel Martyn Scholarship competition for choreography in the final year. Second year students are expected to present a choreographed entry and design and implement the production of the final concert including all aspects of program conception and promotion.

Designed to run over two years, you can graduate after the first year with the Certificate IV in Dance (Teaching and Management) to work as an assistant teacher.
This course is also available to international students.
