How do I apply? Note: The following information is for Australian residents. International students should apply through the International Student Office. (International students currently studying VCE or IB at a Victorian Secondary School who wish to apply for a Higher Education or TAFE Program at Box Hill Institute must apply through VTAC.) Applications can be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) or directly to Box Hill Institute. The type of application depends on the course you are applying for and the mode of study (part-time, full-time or distance learning or flexible delivery). When do VTAC application close? - Friday 28 September 2007 at 5.00pm for timely 2008 applications

- Friday 14 December 2007 at 5.00pm for very late 2008 applications
Late and very late applications incur extra costs. Remember this is for full-time study and applies to some courses. When does VTAC change of preference close? - Monday 24 December 2007 at 12.00 noon for change of preference
When do non-VTAC applications close?This varies from course to course but for most courses commencing in February the closing date will be in November. However, some may remain open until early February. What are the prerequisites/entry requirements?The prerequisites vary depending on the course you are applying for. Many courses require satisfactory completion of VCE. Some require you to be employed and others may require you to present a folio of work or attend an interview. Specific course prerequisites are detailed for each course. How much does it cost? For 2008 enrolments, the TAFE tuition fee contribution is charged at $1.37 per student contact hour up to a maximum of $877.00 per year for government-funded courses. There is also a student amenities fee of $52.00 for part-time students and $72.00 for full-time students. On top of the tuition fee contribution, students may be required to pay a materials fee, which varies depending on the course. Some materials fees may incur a GST. These are the 2008 fees rates; they may increase in 2009 in line with the CPI. More information about fees and charges. Can I get Austudy/Youth Allowance? Most full-time courses attract the Austudy/Youth Allowance. There are several other schemes for assisting those who wish to return to study. Refer to Financial Assistance for further details. What if I cannot afford to pay the fees?Box Hill Institute offers students financial assistance during their courses. Student loans and assistance grants are available. Refer to Financial Assistance for further details. How long are the courses? Course length differs from course to course. Generally Diploma courses are two years full-time and Certificate IV courses are one year full-time. Can I get any Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)/ Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC)?RPL/RCC is usually available where a student has completed equivalent studies, experience in the workplace, voluntary work, social or domestic activities or through formal or informal training and/or is eligible for recognition of prior learning. Can I start a course mid-year?Many courses at Box Hill Institute have a mid-year intake (July). These courses may be available full-time or part-time. Can I defer my course?Once you have been accepted into a course, you may decide not to take that place up until the following year – this is called 'deferment'. Your place in the course will be held for a period of one year. Some courses allow deferment while others do not. Can I take leave of absence from my studies?Yes, some courses allow you to take up to six months leave of absence from studies. You must have been at the Institute for at least one full semester. Can I go to university after doing a course at Box Hill Institute?Yes, the process of going from TAFE to university or university to TAFE is known as 'articulation' or 'pathways'. If you complete a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree course you will be eligible to receive recognition for some subjects undertaken if you apply for a university degree in the same area of study. You will generally need a credit average in order to gain the maximum credits, but it is important to check with your university of choice as to the number of credit points you can expect. Can I get a refund on fees I have paid? Yes, as long as you withdraw in writing within 4 weeks of the commencement of your course. For government-funded TAFE-level courses, in 2008, unless you are taking up a place at another educational institute the $55.00 minimum tuition fee will not be refunded.
