What does this course involve?

If you’re looking for a career, or want to develop your skills in information communications and technology, this course is designed for you.

This course will teach you how to create user documents, install operating system software and run standard diagnostic tests.

You will develop your communication skills, learn to provide advice to clients and apply Occupational Health and Safety principles in the workplace.

You will learn how to implement system software changes, customise software for clients and use advanced features of computer applications.

This course may provide you with entry-level information and communications technology employment opportunities as an administration officer, office worker or junior technician.

This course articulates to a Certificate IV in Information Technology, and further studies in Diploma in Information Technology courses.

    Length of course

    A traineeship Certificate III in IT will take between 6 to 24 months to complete. It will depend upon the skill level of the trainee, the number of competencies studied at any one time, and any RPL/RCC applications successfully applied for.

    Common Core

    ICAD3218A – Create user documentation - (20 hours)

    Develops the skills required to create documents that give clear instructions to meet the needs of a specific user or group of users to perform information technology tasks. These documents may include procedure manuals, training material, on-line help files, design specifications, etc.

    ICAI3020A – Install and optimise operating system software - (20 hours)

    This unit involves the knowledge and tasks required for the installation of operating system software. Students will also make adjustments to software to ensure system optimisation.

    ICAS3031A – Provide advice to clients - (40 hours)

    Advice and support to clients involves the ability to communicate technical information in a clear, concise and jargon free manner.

    ICAS3234A – Care for computer hardware - (20 hours)

    Students will identify and practise the skills required for the selection, maintenance and positioning of computer hardware in a business environment. Safe work practices will be established for maintenance tasks relating to system hardware and associated peripheral devices.

    ICAT3025A – Run standard diagnostic tests - (20 hours)

    This competency covers the skills and knowledge needed to perform preventative maintenance and system diagnostics. Tasks involved include creating and following testing policies, conducting diagnostic tests on a range of platforms, scheduled fault-finding, optimising of hard drives, scanning for viruses and correctly identifying the root causes of the problems.

    ICAU3004A – Apply occupational health and safety procedures - (20 hours)

    This unit involves the demonstration of knowledge of correct occupational health and safety (OH&S) principles and practices in the workplace. A person must be able to demonstrate the ability to comply with OH&S requirements relating to the use of computing equipment. They must also be able to identify unsafe practices and recommend appropriate ergonomic changes.

    ICAB3018A – Develop macros and templates for clients using standard products - (60 hours)

    This unit develops the ability to create macros and templates for clients using recognised software applications. A variety of macros and templates are created using a minimum of two software applications following a specification requirement.

    ICAB4135A – Create a simple mark-up language document to specification - (20 hours)

    This competency develops the skills required to design, create and save a simple mark-up language document using a text editor rather than an authoring tool.

    ICAB4169A – Use development software and it tools to build a basic website - (20 hours)

    In this unit you learn how to build a basic website that is consistent with design and technical requirements, and business expectations. All development work will accurately meet a defined website specification.

    ICAS4201A – Transfer content to a website using commercial packages - (20 hours)

    You will learn how to transfer content from a remote
    location to a web server using commercially available IT products. The purpose of this unit is to demonstrate the ability to successfully upload new or revised information on a website.

    Specialist Core Stream – Applications

    ICAI3110A – Implement system software changes - (20 hours)

    This unit involves the implementation of system software changes and steps involved in handing over the modified system to the client’s operational area. You will learn how to implement changes to the client's system with minimum disruption to the system and users. You will learn how to plan, communicate and document system changes to ensure the client is aware of and agrees to changes and minimum system disruption.

    ICAU3019A – Migrate to new technology - (20 hours)

    In this unit you will develop and apply the skills and knowledge in using new or upgraded technology.

    ICAU3028A – Customise packaged software applications for clients - (60 hours)

    This unit analyses, designs, implements and
    reviews the customisation of software applications, using simple programming constructs. For example students would learn how to customise a relational database.

    ICAU3126A – Use advanced features of computer applications - (40 hours)

    Students learn how to use advanced features in a range of computer software applications. A minimum of three software applications are used to their full capacity. For example advanced features would include import and export functions, and capacities to increase user efficiency and productivity.
