What does this course involve?

This course will give you the necessary skills and knowledge for working with children and youth involved in child protection, youth justice and supported accommodation systems.

You will develop skills in providing care, protection and support services to young people.

You will develop case-planning and communication skills, and learn to facilitate cooperative behaviour.

You will receive an introduction to mental health work and the alcohol and drugs sector, as well as learn advanced first aid skills.

This course is also available to international students.

What further study options will I have?

You may wish to progress into advanced level studies in areas such as social work, welfare work or youth studies.

Can I apply?

  • It is preferred you are 21 years or over
  • You must have a current Working with Children Check
  • You must have a current National Police Record Check

For Non Year 12 applicants:

  • You must demonstrate skills in literacy and numeracy by completing a test at a cost of around $45.
  • The next round of literacy and numeracy testing will take place at our Elgar Campus Building 3, Level 3, on Thursday, 18 December at 6:30.

For traineeship applicants:

  • You must have previously registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre
  • You must have a training contract with an employer

How do I apply?

  • To apply for a full time position in this course you must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process. Details of the VTAC application process are at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August. If the Institute still has vacancies after the VTAC places have been offered, you will be able to apply directly to the Institute.

Will my previous experience or study count?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.
