What does this course involve?

This course will provide you with the essential skills to begin your career in the disability sector.
You’ll receive an orientation to disability work and learn how to provide services and empower people with disabilities.
You’ll develop support procedures, plan and implement integration into the community for your clients and learn to work within the legal and ethical guidelines.
Develop your communication, advocacy and networking skills, and learn how to support older people with disabilities.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may provide you with employment opportunities in residential or community settings with people with disabilities in a direct care role.
You may be able to find employment in:
- residential services
- employment services (training and supporting people with disabilities to work in open employment or services that act as an employer, such as supported employment services)
- recreational services
- adult day training services
- advocacy services
- respite services
- peer support programs
- educational facilities

What further study options will I have?
You may wish to progress into the Advanced Diploma of Disability or related degree courses (such as the Bachelor of Social Work) at a higher education organisation.
Can I apply?
- You must be 18 years or over (or mature age)
- You must have a current Working with Children Check
- You must have a current National Police Record Check
For traineeship:
- You must have previously registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre
- You must have a training contract with an employer
How do I apply?
- To apply for a full time position in this course you must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process. Details of the VTAC application process are at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August. If the Institute still has vacancies after the VTAC places have been offered, you will be able to apply directly to the Institute.
