What does this course involve?

This course is designed for those who assist pharmacists in hospitals and community health settings.

If you are currently working in a hospital pharmacy, you can choose to do the course online. Or you can undertake this course as a traineeship.

You will learn how to use basic medical terminology, undertake pharmacy technician duties and procure, maintain and package pharmaceutical products. You will gain skills in distributing pharmaceutical products and dispensing prescriptions.

You will also gain valuable skills in working with culturally diverse clients and co-workers, provide training to others, and learn how to organise your work priorities.

Please note: this course is not designed for retail pharmacy assistants.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may provide you with employment opportunities as a pharmacy technician in a hospital or community health organisation.

What further study options will I have?

You may be eligible to progress into the Certificate IV in Health Service Assistance (Hospital/Community Health Pharmacy Technician).

Can I apply?

For the full time course:

  • You must possess a mature disposition and have a genuine interest in hospital pharmacy work
  • To apply for the online course you must have basic computer skills
  • You must demonstrate skills in literacy and numeracy by completing a test at a cost of around $45.
  • The next round of literacy and numeracy testing will take place at our Elgar Campus Building 3, Level 3, on Thursday, 18 December at 6:30.


For the traineeship:

  • You must have previously registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre
  • You must have a training contract with an employer

For the flexible delivery course:

  • You must have basic computer skills
  • You must be employed as a pharmacy technician in a hospital pharmacy department

    Will my previous experience or study count?

    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.
