What does this course involve?

This course is designed to equip you with the necessary skills for a career in interior decoration and design.
You’ll develop your knowledge of colour, soft furnishings, lighting and materials and finishes.
You’ll learn how to respond to briefs, prepare presentation drawings and use computer-aided design for two-dimensional and three-dimensional work.
Entrance requirements
Australian Year 12 or equivalent with a pass. Relevant senior employment experience in industry will be considered.
English Language Proficiency
A minimum IELTS overall score of 5.5 (Academic).
A minimum TOEFL score of 530 for paper examination; 179 for computer based and 71 for Internet based.
Special admission requirements
Applicants will be required to submit a folio of artwork that contains personal examples of artistic and/or creative pieces in any form (photography, art, drawing etc.)
Past application and/or interest in this area will also be taken into consideration (sewing of curtains, soft furnishings, decorating etc.).
Must be able to show a relationship between artistic and/or creative pieces and Interior Design and Decoration.
Cost
Aus $9,500 per year
plus amenities and materials fees.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may provide you with employment opportunities as a:
- assistant decoration consultant
- assistant design consultant in specialised retail or wholesale outlets within the decoration industry and in a design consultancy
- consultant specialising in colour, soft furnishings, furniture design, lighting, or office design.

What further study options will I have?
You may wish to articulate into the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Contemporary Arts at Deakin University and receive credits for studies already undertaken.

CUFSAF01B – Follow health, safety, security procedures - (15 hours)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge which everyone in the workplace must have in order to work safely. It covers a range of industry contexts involving a variety of different conditions and hazards.
VBG883 – Materials and finishes - (36 hours)
To provide participants with a knowledge of the interior materials, hard finishes, hardware,
fixtures, built in appliances and quality standards which are commonly used in commercial and residential scale buildings and to enable participants to make informed selections of these items.
CUVVSP12A – Produce digital images - (50 hours)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce digital images through the exploration and application of a range of techniques, equipment and materials.
ABC001 – Construction 1 - (54 hours)
To provide students with a general knowledge of construction principles, standards and services commonly used in single storey residential buildings.
VBG881 – Colour studies 1 - (36 hours)
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to apply colour theories and principles to given projects and briefs.
CUVDES02A – Apply the design process to two-dimensional work in response to a brief - (50 hours)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to explore and apply the design process in a 2-dimensional (2D) way in response to a brief. This is a core unit in design fundamentals and as such underpins many other specialisation units.
CUSGEN01A – Use and adapt to changes in technology - (20 hours)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and adapt to a variety of technological changes within the cultural industries.
WRRS1B – Sell products and services - (18 hours)
This unit involves the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to sell products and services in a retail environment. It involves the use of sales techniques and encompasses the key selling skills from approaching the customer to closing the sale.
VBG884 – Soft furnishings 1 - (54 hours)
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge requiredto evaluate soft furnishings and to specify particular products for specific applications
CUVCRS03A – Produce computer-aided drawings - (50 hours)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a range of CAD program functions and features to produce drawings
CUVDES05A – Interpret and respond to a brief - (15 hours)
Provides students with the skills and knowledge required to interpret and respond to a brief through the production of work.
CUVSP15A – Research and apply techniques for the application to spatial design - (50 hours)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research and apply techniques for application to spatial design.
VBG882 – Colour studies 2 - (36 hours)
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to develop co-ordinated and specific schemes that meet the requirements of project briefs and industry needs.
CUVDSP04A – Research and apply the history and theory of design to design practice - (65 hours)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research and analyse the history and theory of design for application to design practice.
CUVCOR09A – Select and apply drawing techniques and media to represent and communicate the concept - (80 hours)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop drawings which represent and communicate the concept.
ABC055 – Working drawings 1 - (70 hours)
To provide the participants with basic skills required to read and interpret plans and specifications and undertake basic architectural drafting of a small single storey residential scale building.
Second Year
ABC011 – CAD 3 - 3D models - (36 hours)
This module is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to create Architectural 3D Models for the purpose of providing external and internal perspective views.
ABC002 – Construction 2 - (54 hours)
To provide students with a knowledge of construction principles, practices and services commonly used in low rise residential scale buildings up to three storeys.
ABC042 – Presentation drawings 2 - (36 hours)
Presentation Drawings 2 provides students with the opportunity to further develop skills gained in Presentation Drawings 1 required for the preparation of advanced two and three dimensional presentation drawings and model making skills for domestic scale buildings.
VBG889 – Lighting - (36 hours)
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to design artificial and natural lighting for interiors and external areas.
VBG890 – Design history 2 - (36 hours)
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to analyse the major historical influences on design with emphasis on regional and local cultures.
VBG891 – Design studio 2 - (108 hours)
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to interpret a design brief and develop solutions to interior design projects.
BSBSBM401A – Establish business and legal requirements - (40 hours)
The unit involves identifying and complying with business legal and administrative requirements.
LMFDN5001A – Generate and transfer complex computer-aided drawings and specifications - (72 hours)
This unit covers the preparation of complex drawings using computer-aided techniques and capabilities, including three-dimensional modelling, exploded assembly drawings and conversion of drawings for CNC applications.
VBG887 – Soft furnishings 2 - (54 hours)
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to advise clients on the selection and purchase of appropriate soft furnishings.
VBG892 – Design studio 3 - (216 hours)
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to complete and present a variety of projects to an industry accepted standard.
CUVDSP02A – Develop self as designer - (60 hours)
This is a professional practice unit, which describes the development of technical and conceptual skills required to work as a practising designer. It also deals with communication effectively and working strategically to achieve planned outcomes as a designer.
