What does this course involve?

If you’re employed as a trainee in the electronics equipment, electrical or refrigeration appliances, business equipment or security systems industries, this course will give you the skills to install and carry out routine equipment maintenance.
You can choose from these five streams:

  • Electronics equipment - covers fault finding and repairing consumer and industrial electronics equipment
  • Electrical appliances – covers the installation and adjustment of small electrical appliances such as washing machines, dryers, heaters or stoves
  • Business equipment – covers the installation and adjustment of electronic equipment such as photocopiers, computers, printers and fax machines
  • Security systems – covers the installation and routine servicing of electronic security equipment
  • Refrigeration appliances - covers the installation and adjustment of refrigeration appliances and airconditioning units.

You will learn how to install and terminate wiring systems, undertake basic repairs to electrical and electronic systems, and assemble and dismantle components.

This course may provide you with employment opportunities as an assistant technician or assistant tradesperson in the electronics equipment, electrical or refrigeration appliances, business equipment or security systems industries.

What further study options will I have?

You may wish to progress into the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Assembly and Servicing or the Certificate III in Electronics - Building Services (Security/Fire Protection Systems).

Can I apply?

  • You must have successfully completed Year 11 Mathematics and English or be a mature age applicant
  • You must have previously registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre
  • You must have a training contract with an employer

    Part time - 1 year (usually one day per week for 40 weeks, with the other four days spent in the workplace)

    Will my previous experience or study count?

    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.
