What does this course involve?
If you are a dance teacher or assistant, or a dancer looking to embark on a teaching career in private dance studios, this is an ideal course. It focuses on three major streams: dance (technique, styles and choreography), teaching (methods, principles and strategies) and business management (including finance, marketing and promotions).
Study areas covered include: working with the principles of safe dance teaching for children; ballet; jazz; contemporary; anatomy; stagecraft, production, composition, music reading, and a number of business skills are also explored. Elective studies can also be taken in character or tap dance.
You’ll gain up-to-date knowledge in the areas of injury prevention, anatomy, and physiology, and learn dance studio management and production technical support skills, as well as the practical elements of teaching.
The course has a high practical content and you’ll be expected to work hours outside of your class allocations for various presentations. There are also elements of technical production, including a final presentation in the Laurel Martyn Scholarship competition for choreography in the final year. Second year students are expected to present a choreographed entry and design and implement the production of the final concert including all aspects of program conception and promotion.
Designed to run over two years, you can exit after the first year of this course, with the Certificate IV in Dance (Teaching and Management) to work as an assistant teacher.
This course is also available to international students.
