What does this course involve?

This course will give you extensive training in all areas of veterinary nursing.

You値l learn how to provide safe and effective animal care, assist with surgical and anaesthetic procedures and maintain equipment.

You値l gain a comprehensive knowledge of workplace safety, general administration, and coordinating consulting and theatre routines.

You値l also learn how to advise clients about nutrition and animal care, grooming and worming products.

What further study options will I have?

You may wish to undertake the microchipping short course at Box Hill Institute and become an authorised animal microchipper. You may also wish to progress into a Diploma of Veterinary Nursing.

Can I apply?

  • You must have successfully completed Year 10, or equivalent although completion of Year 12 is highly recommended
  • You must have a minimum of 15 hours paid work in a veterinary clinic
  • You must supply evidence of a current tetanus vaccination

    How will I be selected for this course?

    • Supplementary requirements to the application process apply:

      • You can apply directly to the Institute for both on-campus and off-campus study.
      • Applications for on-campus study are taken in October/November each year and dependent on demand, may also be taken in June for mid-year commencement.
      • Applications for off-campus study are taken throughout the year.
      • If you are a veterinary nurse who wishes to update your skills, you can apply for enrolment in individual subjects within the course. Subjects can be completed on-campus or off-campus.
      • Traineeships are also available for veterinary nursing students. Further details, including eligibility criteria, can also be obtained from the Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences on + 61 3 8892 2056.

    Length of course

    On campus students are expected to complete their course in 2 years (on and off-the-job training).

    Off campus flexible delivery is self paced and is expected to be completed in no more than 3 years.
