What does this course involve?

If you’re a diploma-qualified library technician, this course will give you specialist skills in a range of areas.

You will learn how to establish effective workplace relationships, plan and develop information management systems, activities and events.

You can choose to enhance your technical skills in updating and creating web pages, incorporating digital photography in multimedia presentations and undertaking marketing activities.

This course may also develop your leadership skills, help you to manage meetings and recruit and select staff.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may provide you with employment as a senior library technician in school, university, institute, public, special, state and national libraries.

You may also find employment in information agencies, booksellers, library supply agencies and with library software suppliers.

You will also be eligible to apply for membership with the Australian Library and Information Association as a library technician.

What further study options will I have?

You will receive advanced status within courses of professional librarianship and can gain at least twelve months of exemptions in relevant courses. Individual generic units are also recognised in other courses of study, allowing for movement into a wide range of career paths.

Can I apply?

  • You must have successfully completed the Diploma of Library/Information Services or a library-related diploma
  • You must have recent work experience as a library technician

How do I apply?

  • To apply for a full time position in this course you must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process. Details of the VTAC application process are at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August. If the Institute still has vacancies after the VTAC places have been offered, you will be able to apply directly to the Institute.

Will my previous experience or study count?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.

Core

BSBFLM503A – Establish effective workplace relationships - (60 hours)

Frontline management plays an important role in developing and maintaining positive relationships in internal and external environments so that customers, suppliers and the organisation achieve planned outputs/outcomes.

CUEFIN02B – Manage a budget - (40 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to take responsibility for the management of a budget where others may have developed the budget. The skills and knowledge required for budget development are found in the unit CUEFIN01B Develop a budget. combined assessment of these units is appropriate.

CULLB505B – Analyse and describe information materials - (30 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse and describe material by indexing and abstracting the content and format of materials to ensure the efficient retrieval of information by customers.

CUVADM05A – Plan and develop information management systems - (60 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement information management systems within an organisation. This role would generally be undertaken by administrators and managers. The unit is generic in nature and may be applied in a range of industry contexts.

CULLB510B – Develop and maintain community stakeholder relationships - (50 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and maintain community and customer links. As such, the unit focuses on the need for regular and ongoing community/customer consultation to maintain the quality of service provision.

CULLB708B – Manage information access - (40 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor and evaluate customer information needs, and to develop and implement appropriate access policies within the organisation.

CULLB701B – Analyse and describe specialist/complex material - (60 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge to apply creative, whole systems thinkging to cataloguing, classification, indexing, abstracting or otherwise describing specialist and complex material.

This unit covers managing the preparation of meetings, chairing the meetings, organising the minutes and reporting outcomes.

BSBFLM404A – Lead work teams - (50 hours)

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to lead a team or work group in a business environment. It includes developing plans, providing leadership and supervising the performance of a group.

BSBHR402A – Recruit and select personnel - (40 hours)

This unit covers the overall planning of personnel recruitment, writing job descriptions, and recruiting and selecting staff. This role may be carried out by the manager or the task may be delegated to others.

CUEMAR03B – Undertake marketing activities - (60 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to co-ordinate a range of marketing and promotional activities with some limited short term planning.

CUETEM09A – Manage diversity - (60 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide leadership in a diverse workplace where customers and staff may be from a wide range of backgrounds. It builds on the unit CUSGEN02B Work in a culturally diverse environment, and reflects the importance of diversity in all of the cultural industries. This unit is closely based on, and equates to, the unit THHGLE09B Manager workplace diversity in the Tourism and Hospitality Training Packages.

CULMS011A – Develop a disaster preparedness plan - (30 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop an disaster preparedness plan for any collection of cultural material. As such the unit applies to museums, libraries and other organisations and sites which hold significant collections of cultural material both indoor and outdoor.
