What does this course involve?

If you’re looking to start your career as a library technician, working as part of a library or information services team, the Diploma of Library/Information Services course will give you two years of essential training. Certificate IV in Library/Information Services is the first year of this course.

You’ll develop an understanding of the library information services industry, learn how to search databases and use cataloguing tools.

You’ll help customers access information, operate computing packages and lead work teams.

This course will also teach you how to provide quality customer service, manage effective working relationships and manage your own work priorities and professional development.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may provide you with employment opportunities as a library assistant in school, university, institute, public or special libraries.

You may also find employment in information agencies, booksellers, library supply agencies and library software suppliers.

What further study options will I have?

You will progress into the second year of the Diploma of Library/Information Services. You may then wish to further your studies with the Advanced Diploma of Library/Information Services.

Can I apply?

  • You must have successfully completed Year 12 , or equivalent (or be mature age)
  • You should have good written and oral communication skills
  • You must have basic computer skills
  • You must have previously registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre
  • You must have a training contract with an employer

How do I apply?

  • To apply for a full time position in this course you must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process. Details of the VTAC application process are at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August. If the Institute still has vacancies after the VTAC places have been offered, you will be able to apply directly to the Institute.

Length of course

Full time - 1 year (to complete the Diploma you will only need to complete a further year)
Part time - 2 to 3 years (to complete the Diploma you will only need to complete a further 2 to 3 years)

Single units may also be taken in a variety of modes such as weekly classes, day blocks, distance learning and off-site (on-the-job).

CUEOHS01B – Implement workplace health, safety and security procedures - (60 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement occupational health and safety policies and practices in the workplace where an established OHS framework already exists. It covers a range of industry contexts involving a variety of different conditions and hazards.

BSBFLM404A – Lead work teams - (50 hours)

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to lead a team or work group in a business environment. It includes developing plans, providing leadership and supervising the performance of a group.

ICAITU006C – Operate computing packages - (60 hours)

This unit defines the competency required to identify, select and correctly operate desktop applications for a range of purposes.

CULLB001A – Develop and apply knowledge of the library information services industry - (60 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and apply a basic knowledge of the library/information services industry. As such, the unit underpins performance across all areas of work.

CULLB002A – Obtain information from external and networked sources to meet customer needs - (20 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to source and obtain information from external and networked sources to meet customer needs.

CULLB005A – Search databases - (30 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to search and retrieve information from a range of databases. The unit focuses on knowledge of the different types of databases available to the information service provider and the skills to use different searching strategies to meet customer information needs.

CULLB302B – Use cataloguing tools - (40 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use established cataloguing tools and rules. The unit is introductory in nature and focuses on a general understanding of the concept of bibliographic control. As such the unit underpins other cataloguing units.

CULLB401B – Assist customers to access information - (40 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist customers in obtaining information relevant to their needs. As such, the unit requires good basic research and searching skills plus a sound knowledge of the scope of information sources available within the organisation. More complex and challenging information needs are covered in the unit CULLB504B Research and analyse information to meet customer needs.

CULLB412B – Undertake cataloguing activities - (100 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to complete basic copy or original descriptive cataloguing and catalogue maintenance activities. This work is carried out in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.

CULLB602B – Use, evaluate and extend own information literacy skills - (50 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and extend own information literacy skills as a professional information provider.

Electives

CUECOR03A – Provide quality service to customers - (20 hours)

This unit describes the interpersonal, communication and customer service skills required to create a positive impression and to establish rapport with the customer. It involves the skills and knowledge of understanding, clarifying and meeting customer needs and expectations. These fundamental customer service skills are required by a wide variety of people working at all levels across a range of cultural industry workplaces.

BSBFLM501A – Manage personal work priorities and professional development - (60 hours)

Frontline management is responsible for managing their own performance and professional development. At this level, work will normally be carried out within complex and diverse methods and procedures which require the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

CULLB203B – Develop and use information literacy skills - (40 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct basic research and present information in response to an identified need. These skills are vital to all information service practitioners and the unit underpins effective performance in all job roles.

CULLB205B – Process and maintain information resources - (30 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to ensure consistent organisation and maintenance of information, materials and equipment (both print-based and electronic). This work would generally be carried out under supervision.

CULLB307B – Use multimedia - (30 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a range of multimedia equipment/programs. The unit is general and introductory in nature and does not include detailed operational knowledge of technologies required by audiovisual technicians or multimedia specialists.

CULMS207B – Assist with the presentation of public activities and events - (50 hours)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to complete a range of tasks under supervision for the set-up and operation of activities and events. As such the unit includes a general knowledge of the issues to be considered in staging any type of activity or event.
