Letter from the limes
for John Howard

You will be relieved to hear, Flaccus
that I have arrived by degrees
at the prevailing mood
of Caesar

I am seeing more than one moon
peering through the windows of this world
that certain languages cannot accommodate certain ideas
that the sins of our fathers should be buried with their sons

I was not swayed
by any speech
at least none
that springs to mind

such sentiments
already have their wings
nest in florid arbors
planted with the hope of bigger things

no, I believe what finally convinced me
of the need to narrow my scope
was a very mortal desire
for union with my kinsmen

who tire of my arguments
who hold their tongues as close as their swords
