Music Composition (Songwriting and Media Composition)

There are many composition courses offered but none that focus specifically on the interrelationships between songwriting and media composition. With this in mind the Centre for Performing Arts has developed the Music Composition (Songwriting and Media Composition) stream within the Bachelor of Applied Music.

The art of songwriting and the compositional skills employed for screen composition are used as a catalyst to explore the emergent areas of interactive audio design (and performance), sound design and the extended application of music/audio across the burgeoning telecommunications industries.

You can expect to gain theoretical and practical experiences in writing music and creating audio for film, television, advertising media formats, computer- and console-based games, interactive performance and museum-based installations and the themed entertainment industry. Specific expertise in software, including Cycling 74’s Max/MSP, Ableton Live and open-source programs, will be provided.

In addition, you will take a core number of subjects focusing on aural skills, harmony, composition and arranging, MIDI applications, music business, music history, ensembles, and have exposure to various performance requirements, such as instrumental and vocal workshops.
