Frequently Asked Questions

What time are day and evening classes?

Hours for day and evening classes are usually as follows:

Day classes9.00 am to 4.00 or 4.30 pm
Evening classes6.00 pm to 9.00 pm

How do I register for a course?

Details of how to register are posted on this site under ‘How to Apply’. Once you have registered, we will send you the application forms and details regarding the application process and relevant dates as soon as they become available.

Can I apply for more than one course?

Yes, but you must register separately for each course, and attend the relevant information session for each. However, you are only required to complete one assessment.

How are applicants selected?

To be selected for courses you will have to sit for a multiple-choice assessment of numeracy and literacy, attend a compulsory information session and complete an application form. Registered applicants will be advised of dates for these sessions when finalised.

Do I need to apply through VTAC?

No, all registrations and applications are made directly to Box Hill Institute.

Why do I have to attend an information session?

Making the commitment to study with Box Hill Institute is a big step, so we ask all interested applicants to attend a compulsory information session. During the session we will provide you with as much information as possible about your chosen course so that you can make an informed decision as to whether you are able to commit to the expectations required, and whether it is the right path for you. We also allow time for questions to ensure you have all the information you need.

Why do I have to sit for an aptitude assessment?

We ask interested applicants to sit for the multiple-choice assessment to ascertain the level of numeracy and literacy necessary for students to successfully complete the courses.

Can I view an old assessment so I know what to expect?

No, we are not able to allow applicants to view old assessments. However, a sample of a similar style of assessment is available on the VETASSESS website at http://www.vetassess.com.au (Nursing test).

If I have already done an assessment with VTAC or another TAFE do I still need to sit for this assessment?

Yes. Our test is unrelated to those conducted by other organisations. However, it is valid for 12 months, and you need only sit for one assessment regardless of how many courses you are applying for (within the Centre for Health and Community Services).

Can I get help with the assessment if I have a disability or learning disorder?

Yes, assistance can be arranged through Disability Liaison Services.

Can I apply for courses if I have not completed VCE or I am a mature age student?

Yes, application is made directly to the Centre for Health and Community Services, not through VTAC. As we conduct our own testing, providing VCE scores or completing Year 12 is not a necessary component of your application. We encourage applicants of all ages.

Do you offer concessions?

Yes. If you hold a Health Care Card you may be eligible for a concession. Rates vary depending on the course but generally the discount works out to approximately 50% of the full fee (see ‘Applications’ for fees).

What can I do if I am not accepted into my chosen course?

Unfortunately, due to the high level of interest in most of our courses and the limited number of places on offer, it is not possible to accept all applicants. However, if you are not successful please do not be discouraged from trying again at the next intake.

How much can I expect to be paid when I complete my qualification?

We do not offer advice on salary expectations. However, you may wish to contact the advisory board of your chosen field, such as the Nurses Board of Victoria or the Australian Early Childhood Association, or refer to Wage Line for further details about salaries.

Where can I find specific information on courses?

Detailed information on each course can be viewed on this site by visiting http://www.bhtafe.edu.au/hacs then clicking on the link to relevant courses at the bottom of the page. Details on how to register and apply for courses are available on the ‘Applications’ link of this page. More extensive details will be covered in the information sessions.

If my course includes a work placement what does this involve?

Box Hill Institute will organise placements on your behalf, but students attending part-time courses will be expected to be available full time during work placements. Details and dates will be covered at the information sessions.

Do you offer traineeships?

Some courses may offer traineeships, but are subject to funding availability and strict criteria. For more details contact the course coordinators on 9286 9106.

What are elective units?

In most cases, elective units are pre determined by the Institute based upon the most appropriate industry outcomes for Victorian requirements.
