Simulation Centre

Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre

The Box Hill Institute Nursing Skills Centre of Excellence (NSCE) is a simulation and clinical skills facility designed to facilitate simulation based learning and research opportunities for healthcare professionals.

As a participant you will be immersed in interactive, problem-based, experiential scenarios where you will learn, rehearse, perfect and reflect on your collective knowledge and skills.

The NSCE Mission

Provide and promote quality driven, evidence-based simulation education to facilitate excellence in clinical practice and performance, teaching and research.

Provide health care disciplines with simulation-based education programs that promote patient-centred care and the goal of improving patient safety.

Operate within a business plan and culture that is customer-focused, encourages initiative, operational efficiency and effectiveness, and seeks opportunities to expand the service.

The NSCE offer opportunities for:

  • Individually tailored education solutions. We welcome enquiries and discussions about opportunities for collaboration around tailored simulation education, funding tenders and research.
  • Collaborative education opportunities.  Collaborating with organisations can often lead to students and health care professionals having access to simulated learning.  This learning experience enhances the skills of practicing health care professionals to help improve the overall quality of patient care.
  • Customised and Commercial Partnerships.  In addition to our ongoing programs, we are continuously working closely with public sector partners and commercial enterprises to design and deliver customised training to meet specific needs.  With our partners, we can develop and run educational events or study days for pharmaceutical companies, public and private hospitals and other organisations.  We can also deliver off-campus simulation education so that you or your employees can learn in their own working environments.

NSCE Staff

On a day to day basis, each session in the simulation facility is equipped with a minimum of 2 dedicated staff.  This includes the instructor driving the computer program (shown top right) in conjunction with a facilitator (shown bottom right) working with students whilst liaising with the instructor.  These two highly trained staff members are in constant contact, and collaborate with both briefing and debriefing sessions.

Often a third and fourth person is required to role play – such as a doctor, nurse, allied health person, relative or a distractor.

Clinical Skills Development and Simulation Workshops

Our centre is well resourced to deliver a range of workshops using a blended learning approach. Face to face teaching and tutorials, e-learning, skills development laboratories and interactive, immersive simulation can be provided in 1, 2, and 3 day programs based on your need.

Visiting Personnel

We believe that involvement and ownership in simulation education is pivotal to successful programs and outcomes. We encourage a team of part time visiting professionals from clinical, academic and research domains to assist our staff with the delivery of sessions.

Simulation Fellows: Those who are focused on developing a professional portfolio and who have been professionally prepared to be part of the NSCE team.

Availability

The centre is currently available for use between 8am and 9pm from Monday to Friday, or by negotiation for extended hours and workshops.

Funding Agreements and Competitive rates

Custom made programs can include exclusive use of the centre, and are available at competitive hire rates that include access to our program design consultancy and delivery resources.

Particularly favourable subsidies are available to regular users and participating partners who are invited to become visiting faculty members as part of their professional development portfolio.  We encourage both teachers and students to adopt the centre as their ‘home base’.
