Split Systems Air-Conditioning

The Certificate II in Engineering — Production (Air-conditioning) can provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to install and commission residential split air-conditioning systems.

In order to legally carry out this work, installers of split air-conditioners must hold:

  • a restricted licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) for the Installation & De-commissioning of Split Air-Conditioning Systems (up to 18kw)
  •  in Victoria, registration or licensing from the Plumbing Industry Commission (PIC) to Install & Commission Air Conditioning Systems (issuing of compliance certificates).

Content of program

The Certificate II in Engineering — Production (Air-conditioning) covers the following areas:

  • Introduction to Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, as applied to Split Air-conditioning Systems
  • Basic Refrigeration/Air-conditioning pipe connection methods as applied to Split Air-conditioning Systems
  • Basic Refrigeration/Air-conditioning refrigerant handling service procedures as applied to Split Air-conditioning Systems
  • Understanding Ozone Depletion and the Codes of Good Refrigeration Practice
  • Installation and Commissioning of Split System Air-conditioning Systems
  • Commissioning of Split Air-conditioning Systems.

Length of program

The nominal duration of the program is approximately 104 hours, which includes approximately 40 hrs of project/assignment work.

Please note: The length of time taken to complete the program may vary depending on your level of knowledge and skills at the start of the course and whether you might be required to satisfy competency requirements that are outside the compulsory component.

Flexibility

To fit in with your work and family commitments, you can choose from various study options:

  • weekends
  • evenings
  • a combination of weekends and evenings
  • weekday blocks of 3 days
  • distance learning (available for interstate and regional students).

Fees

The fee for the compulsory component (MER 40: Installation of Split Air-conditioning Systems up to 18kw in capacity) is $932 (GST exempt). This amount does not include the cost of applications for processing credits and exemptions, and any additional training that you may need. These will be determined when you start your training.

Credit

As an existing tradesperson, you may be entitled to credits and exemptions for many of the compulsory and optional components of the program.

Pre-requisites

All applicants for this course must satisfy the requirement of National Refrigeration and Air–Conditioning Council (NRAC) to have a minimum of 2 years experience in installing split air-conditioning systems.

Eligibility for registration or licensing by the PIC is the responsibility of the participant. We recommend that you determine your eligibility prior to completing the program. Completing the Box Hill Institute program does not guarantee eligibility.
