Do I need to do a pre-apprenticeship?Apprenticeships in the electrical, refrigeration and air-conditioning trades are in high demand. Some employers will employ an apprentice directly, while others prefer those who have completed a pre-apprenticeship program before employment. During the pre-apprenticeship course you would be encouraged to apply for apprenticeship positions; a number of units in the pre-apprenticeship course will provide you with credits towards the apprenticeship course, therefore reducing the time you spend at school training. If you are able to get an apprenticeship position directly you will not need to enrol in or complete a pre-apprenticeship program; in fact, you could start working in the industry immediately. What are my job prospects when I am qualified? With the current shortage in skilled tradespersons job prospects for qualified electricians and refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanics is very good. Although employment numbers can change with a downturn in the building industry, the prospects should remain good for quite some time. What does the course involve? The Certificate I in Electrotechnology course aims to prepare you for an apprenticeship in the electrical, security or refrigeration air-conditioning trades and increasing your overall employability. You will learn electrical theory, maths and general practical skills, such as how to interpret electrical drawings, how to operate safely in an electrical workshop and how to use CAD systems within an electrical trade. You will also become familiar with the industry in general and develop the building and hand skills required to operate effectively within it. How long is the course?Full-time – 15 weeks (4 days per week, 8.00 am-4.30 am) How much does the course cost? The current enrolment fee is $1024; the enrolment fees for 2008 have not yet been confirmed and may be subject to change. (Concession rates may apply. For further concession information contact Brenda Lang on 9286 9902, or Centrelink.) What do I need to get into the course? We prefer a Year 11 (or equivalent) pass in maths and English. As this is an equal opportunity course, we strongly encourage those with a strong desire to work as an apprentice within the electrical, refrigeration/air-conditioning and security technologies industry to apply. What's involved in the selection process? The next course intake will be August 2008. We will accept names to participate in the selection process between 1 April and 5pm 23 May.
