Zookeeping Courses

What's on offer?

Box Hill Institute offers zookeeping training for people working in the industry as well as a number of short courses in the zookeeping field. The Certificate III in Captive Animals is the new industry qualification for persons operating at a pre-trade level and are undertaking captive animal functions (zookeeper, animal keeper, animal husbandry) with a zoo, wildlife park or theme park environment.

Can I enrol in captive animals courses at Box Hill Institute if I don't have a job?

No. You need to be employed in the captive animal environment while you are enrolled in Certificate III in Captive Animals. Part-time employment is acceptable.

Why do I need to be employed in the industry to be eligible for the training?

Zookeeping training is very much hands-on, that is, much of the training is work based; it wouldn't be possible to gain competency without employment.

What about volunteer work?

We do offer courses that don't have an employment prerequisite. The Certificate II in Animal Studies (Captive Animals Stream) focuses on a range of animal species and is suitable if you are thinking of a career in the animal industry. To be eligible for this course you must be working in volunteer work in the industry. This is a fee-for-service course, which costs approximately $1200.

What about short courses?

The Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences offers a number of short courses in zookeeping:

If you would like more information, visit the 'Short Courses' area.

Do I have to attend Box Hill Institute?

Zookeeping training is offered off campus. Off-campus students work at their own pace and do not need to attend the Institute. Short courses run in the evenings on campus during each term.

What about RPL?

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) recognises the skills and knowledge which you have already attained that relate to the units of competency in the Certificate III in Captive Animals. You can apply for RPL if you have gained a number of skills and knowledge in the workplace (usually more than 6 months on-the-job experience) and/or have other relevant qualifications that may give you credit towards one or more units of competency in the Certificate III in Captive Animals.
