| Are you looking for some highly practical student help in your lab? BioSkills, the Specialist Centre for Biotechnology Training, provides you the biotechnology industry, with a single entry point to five institutes and their students. These are Holmesglen Institute and the TAFE divisions of RMIT, Swinburne University and Victoria Universities and the Specialist Centre located at Box Hill Institute. The TAFE sector has been providing training for the science workforce for over 20 years. Our Laboratory Technology graduates have gone to work in biological, medical, veterinary and plant research, a variety of testing labs and the petrochemical and extractive industries. Our students focus on learning hands-on skills that are immediately applicable in many laboratory environments, including: - Basic laboratory skills, such as buffer preparation, accurate pipetting
- Record keeping
- Calibration and maintenance of instruments
- Aseptic techniques
- Microbiological analysis
- Gel electrophoresis,
- PCR and DNA extractions
- Histology
- Tissue culture
- Use of automated equipment.
Our students are also used to working with sophisticated techniques such as HPLC, standard and Real Time PCR, as well as the set-up and running of automated and robotic procedures. Students who undertake the two-year Diploma in Laboratory Technology (Biotechnology) course spend some of their time in a real-world workplace environment. The BioSkills Network is looking for biotechnology companies or organisations be interested in offering our students short work experience placements or project-based internships. This incurs only a symbolic cost for the company; students need to be paid a minimum of $5 per day to ensure insurance cover. Many past employers have kept on our graduates as new employees.
