Who we areBox Hill Institute’s Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences has expertise in the development and delivery of training programs for a wide range of animal and science-based industries. The Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences has a special focus on biotechnology training and is home to BioSkills, the Specialist Centre in Biotechnology Training. What we doThe Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences delivers training across a range of industry areas including: In addition to vocational courses, the Centre offers a Bridging to Science (Certificate IV in Science) course for adults returning to study. The course is well respected by selection officers in many tertiary health science and science courses that permit mature-age entry. Our highly qualified staff design and deliver training to clients at all levels of training, from short courses (for example, dog grooming) and on-the-job training in veterinary nursing, through to a full-time Advanced Diploma in Laboratory Operations (Biotechnology). Much of this training is offered through a range of enterprise-based delivery models. Typically in this model our staff provide support for industry-based mentoring and assessment, working very closely with employer and employee representatives. Courses are conducted on a commercial basis in nursing and management of wildlife, dog grooming, introduction to zookeeping and introduction to veterinary nursing. Our facilitiesThe Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences is housed in a brand new state-of-the-art building, home to modern laboratories featuring the latest industry standard equipment including a DNA Sequence Analyser, a robotic system for nucleic acid extraction, Real Time PCR and digital image capture and analysis units as well as bioreactors/fermentors. The Centre also features a fully equipped veterinary surgical clinic, dog grooming facilities (Pets on Elgar) and an animal house. The animal facility houses laboratory animals as well as reptiles and amphibians. All of these resources enable our students to learn in a real-to-life environment, in this way developing their practical skills. In August 2004, Box Hill Institute was designated the Specialist Centre for Biotechnology Training by the Victorian State Government, through the Department of Education and Training. This Specialist Centre for Biotechnology Training is known as BioSkills and is located within the Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences. BioSkills is looking to advance biotechnology workforce development in the following areas: - Bio-processing including aseptic techniques, fermentation and protein purification
- Real time PCR, DNA analysis and other laboratory-based biotechnology techniques
- Business and management skills for biotechnology commercialisation
- Intellectual Property (IP) protection and licensing.
