What you need

Computer Hardware

To access the full benefit of this online course, we recommend that your workstation have at least the following capabilities and features:

• a 486/Pentium PC with a SVGA screen and more than 8 Mbytes RAM
• screen resolution set at 800 X 600
• a dial-up or permanent link to an Internet Service Provider
• if a dial-up link is involved, a 28.8K modem (minimum)

Computer Software

The course has been tested with Windows 95, which is the preferred operating system.

In order to complete this online course, you will need to purchase or download copies (where available) of the following software tools from the linked WWW sites. From the site you should explore to find a browser that suites your needs.

• a web browser tool that supports the use of java, fonts, frames and tables - e.g. Netscape 3.04 or Microsoft Explorer 3.0 however the latest versions are preferred.
• an e-mail program and an e-mail account with an Internet Service Provider
• Win95/Word Pad or Win95/MS Word or Mac/MS Word

Textbook purchase

There is no text book for this course.

Computer Skills

This course does not require sophisticated computer skills, however you should be able to use a web browser, either Netscape or Internet Explorer.

If you are not familiar with 'surfing the net', Netscape has a tutorial which would be of assistance to you. It explains the basics of the internet and using a web browser. It is assessed via Help on the Netscape screen. Click on Help, which appears at the top of the screen, then click on Help contents, and finally click on 'Browsing the Web'.

Interner Explorer has a similar tutorial. It is also accessed via Help on the Explorer screen. Click on Help, which appears at the top of the screen, then click on Contents and Index, and finally click on 'Getting started with the Web browser'. It is broken into parts. Click on the name of each section to read the contents.
